A Great Song for any Playlist
Team - here is a song for any workout playlist.
I used an older playlist in my spinning class this evening and I looked around the room to find everyone on beat and nodding their heads to one specific song. The hills became more challenging and everyone pushed through their resistance because they could feel the energy of the song. The song is called "We no speak americano," check it out here:
What do you think? It's simple energy, but very infectious. I loved it and they loved it too. What song makes you move and helps you achieve your goals?

Spinning Playlist - Lots of Hills
Team - Here is a great 50 minute hilly playlist to build leg strength and endurance!
As the instructor, feel free to switch up any of the hills by performing one of three hills: 1) Seated Climb 2) Standing Climb 3) Combination of both 1 and 2. If you don't know which hill to use, please see the "comments" section of the playlist.
It's fun to mix up your spinning playlist by adding a faster song for a seated or standing climb. I specifically put "Remember the Time" at the end of first hill sequence to give the class a little motivation. MJ will always give the class a second wind!
Two Jump series are placed at the start and end of the routine to give the legs a break.
Check out the playlist here:
It's definitely a mashup of artists, songs, BPMs, and genres. But that's the glory of trying to please 30 different people in a class.
And what a cool down song, huh? It's a great song! Comment and let me know what you think of the playlist.

Awesome Spinning Song!
Team - Here is another awesome song to add to your Spinning Playlists. How many times have I said this line? I love fun music with good beats! It just makes life more fun. This Rihanna song gets everyone moving and heart rates up.
I usually do not have songs with easy/familiar lyrics in my Cycling classes because it can take away from the workout. I can tell people are thinking about the meaning of the song, their ex, or something else instead of working hard to overcome the resistance. With that said, this song is an exception. It's the perfect song for jumps on the bike.
Here's the best part: if you don't teach Spinning, add it to your workout mix. It's that good!
Check it out here
Although it's not The Best Cycling Song, it's still great. Do you like it too? Comment and tell me - I personally love it!

The Best Indoor Cycling Song
Hi Team - Happy Monday! I just got in from an awesome workout at my local park. Play sets aren't just for children. They make for an awesome workout too!
Mondays for me mean my indoor cycling class, but my class was cancelled this week due to Fall Break and Northern Kentucky University. I have to keep asking myself, "Is this a good or bad thing?" A break is always nice.
No playlist post tonight, but I will share with you my all time favorite song to use in a Cycling class.
This song is special to me for a couple reasons. I would use my Fitness Director's music when I first started teaching indoor cycling classes. Believe it or not, those were the days without iPods. I would walk into our cycling room at Eastern Kentucky University, put in her CD, grab the profile (she would always detail out the ride to each CD, similar to my Indoor Cycling Posts) and we would start pedaling. She had everything written out for us and, to this day, I think of her every time I hear this song.
This song has it all: great tempo, aggressive chords and an energetic rhythm. My participants always love it because it's easier to follow, you'll have no question when you should start those sprints.
The Best Indoor Cycling Song is "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield. Check it out
Your first :10 sprint starts at :35 - you cannot miss it!
What'd you think? Comment and tell me! If you have a favorite, comment and let me know that as well. Would love to hear from you.
Remember, it's a journey...take one step at a time to reach your fitness goals.

Reggae Spinning Playlist
Team - Bob Marley said it best, "One good thing about music, when it hits - you feel no pain." That's the truth and hopefully tonight's class won't feel any pain. This playlist has about 20 minutes of seated or standing climbs. It's a good one, I promise!
This playlist was inspired by the recent heatwave we've had in Cincinnati. It has been amazing. My friends and I were able to get outside this weekend and enjoy it as well. I feel like I'm in Jamaica, mon! Here is today's forecast for Jamaica and Cincinnati:
Have fun with this playlist. Also, if you're at home and need some nice, chill and positive songs on your iPod, check out the below playlist:

Chill Out Music
Team - I am the first to admit - I work hard, but I chill out a lot too. I teach or workout at least 10 classes/hours a week and nothing feels better than stretching at home with some good music. There is something about being home where you feel comfortable, safe, secure and relaxed.
This week is another switch up from the other "Spinning Playlist" Monday post. I'm beyond exhausted tonight after two classes and I want to share with you how I cool down.
What you'll need:
This playlist is 22 minutes and between every song I take a few sips of water.
The best cool down song is "Dreams On Fire" from Slumdog Millionaire. Take this last song or a few minutes and lay supine (on the spine). Relax, take deep breathes in through the nose and out through the mouth.
It's a journey; it's about taking one step at a time to reach your goals

How to Setup A Spinning Bike
Team - It has been a beautiful Thrusday here in Cincinnati. It's very nice to see the sun shining and people walking around the city.
In my cycling class tonight (and usually every cycling class), I get the same question, "How do I set up my bike?" I always smile and say it's very easy!!!!
Here is a quick tutorial on setting up your bike:
Simple, right? A couple other things to note:

Great Workout Music
Team - Today's post is usually a Spinning playlist, but I thought I would mix it up and share my "Workout Playlist" with all of you. Whether you're trying to get a classroom of people motivated or you're trying to motivate yourself, having a good playlist will help your workouts.
We have iPods, Zunes, MP3 Players and some of us might still use Discmans, but why is it easier to workout with music?
Listening to music is more complex than most of us can hear. The brain has to sort out beats, tones, timing, and different sounds to comprehend the music.
Costas Karageorghis, a sports psychologist, has been studying the effects of exercise and music for 2 decades and determined that there are four factors that contribute to the motivation of a song:
1. Rhythm response - beats per minute
2. Musicality - structure of a song
3. Cultural Impact - preference
4. Association - how we associate with the song
Karageogghis categorized rhythm response and musically as "internal" factors and cultural impact and association as "external" factors.
For example, my one hour "Workout" playlist has upbeat songs for 55 minutes. The BPMs (rhythm response) are faster and the sound is intriguing to me. These are internal factors. The last song on the playlist is by Gaving Degraw relates back to Association. It brings back relaxing memories of my home away from home; Atlanta, GA.
Take a lot at my playlist and let me know what you think:
More than likely, all of my music may not be right for you. Don't let that stop you! Pick the music that is right for you. Find those fast songs that will make you run harder and jump higher. And don't forget to include a slower long at the end so you can stretch and relax at the end of your workout.
What songs are on your workout mix right now?

American Idol Playlist for Indoor Cycling
Team - I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. My weekend was filled with Weddings, Birthdays and lots of quality family time in Peebles, Ohio. This weekend I also had the privilege of attending the Cincinnati Symphony and Pop Orchestra here in Cincinnati, Ohio. The special guest this weekend was the American Idol Runner-up Katharine Mcphee (in my eyes, The American Idol). She was fantastic and sounded amazing! American Idol has truly changed the face of music in the last 5 years. Some of the biggest names in today's music came from the American Idol Stage.
With that said, today's playlist features the hits from our American Idols, including Katharine Mcphee.
Today we're going to keep the pace High or Low:
1: Seated Flat (90-110 rpms)
2: Standing Flat (80-100 rpms)
3: Seated Climb (65-75 rpms)
4: Standing Climb (60-80 rpms)
Here was the beautiful view at Cincinnati's Music Hall. Amazing! And, even better, I live a few blocks away.

Indoor Cycling Playlist - Georgia On My Mind
Hi Team - Happy Monday! I'm excited to get back in the swing of things because we were celebrating Labor Day this time last week. Without further ado, here is your spinning playlist for the week of September 12th.
This playlist was inspired by my home away from home, Georgia. I lived in Atlanta throughout my college career and thought today's playlist should start and end with some Georgia-themed songs. I even threw in some Keri Hilson. (She was born and raised in Decatur, GA.)
Things to note in this playist:
Jumping (seated to standing by smooth transition) is the main focus of this playlist. I wanted to focus on devloping strength and coordination with this class. With this said, do not try jumping up and down for at the same pace for 17.5 minutes. Mix it up! Try coming out of the saddle with a burst of energy or executing the same thing while you approach the seated position. This will help break up the jumps.
From Gladys Knight and the Pips to Ray Charles...I've gotta say it was a smooth ride.
Georgia, you are definately on my mind! Stay healthy and we'll chat soon.

Indoor Cycling Playlist - Various Artists
Hi Team - It's Monday already! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I decided to make a fun playlist to get me out of this workday funk. The weather is changing in Cincinnati and it's depressing because I don't want to let go of Summer 2011.
This playlist has a higher cadence in the first half and the second half will help develop our leg energy along with strengthening and defining our leg muscles. This is all combined with the awesome tunes we'll listen to for this 50 minute ride.
Which song is your favorite? My new favorite song is Moves like Jagger - it's a great song for getting fired up for a spin class!
Enjoy!

Indoor Spinning Playlist - Beginner Playlist
Team - This beginner indoor Spinning/Cycling Playlist is the JAM! Today is the first day of school for Northern Kentucky University. I teach an indoor cycling class for the Campus Recreation Center at Northern Kentucky University.
To say it lightly, this playlist is for everyone! If they have been to class before, great - "clip in and enjoy." If tonight is their first class - "lets have fun and get moving." Explain all three hand positions on the bike, make sure "you're always in control and never letting the bottom bounce on the seat," and "take a break when you need it." Make it your ride!
Highlight of the playlist: Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire - Great movie, even better song!

Indoor Cycling Playlist - Pop Music
Team - Sometimes it's fun to have songs on your playlist that the class may not have heard. This will help the class focus on their form and cadence. Other times, it's a lot of fun to have songs on your playlist that everyone loves!
This is a fun playlist - enjoy it!
"Jai Ho" and "Green Light" are two of my favorite songs to include on playlists. They're upbeat, exciting and send out lots of motivation. What are your favorite songs in a spinning class?

Country Spinning/Cycling Playlist 8.8.11
Team - Yee Haw! Here is your indoor cycling (spinning) playlist for the week. Fifty minutes of country classics. Although some of the class will not be fans of the playlist, this is a simple way to change up your class while still getting a good workout. If they really dont like the playlist, just encourage your class to focus on their form, cadence, and heart rates instead of the music.
Highlight of the playlist for me will be sprinting to Fancy by Reba McEntire!
Hopefully the class will love the playlist and we'll be sweating to some classics.

Spinning or Indoor Cycling Playlist
Hi Team - This indoor cycling playlist has a combination of all elements in two groups. We have "The Start" and "The Finish." The start of the playlist has uptempo songs to keep the legs moving at a quicker cadence, over 85 RPMs. The middle and end of the playlist ("The Finish") has a slower tempo, under 85 RPMs, and we will attack hills both in and out of the saddle.
Excited to see how the class will react to Fleetwood Mac! Throwback!
Enjoy and always wear a helmet : - )

July 25th Spinning/Cycling Playlist
Hi Team,
Happy Happy Monday! Super excited to listen to my playlist tonight in class. I've said it before and I'll say it until the end of time...music is crucial in every class. It costs money to buy these songs every week, but music drives motiviation. This is especially true in a fitness class.
Things to note: Jumps and standing climbs are repeated in this profile. After each climb, back off resistance so the class can jump to the beat of the song.
This profile totals 51 minutes. Feel free to break at the end of each jump.

Enjoy! Can anyone tell me what show comes to mind when you hear track #11?

Playlist of the week - Cycling or a Spinning Class
Here it is team! This is a fun playlist because it's a class for everyone.
To spice things up, I put Nicki Minaj first in the lineup to get the team excited about the next 46 minutes.
Some things to note:
- #3 - 30 second intervals, resistance at level 5 and you are out of the saddle for a break and in the saddle for a fast flat.
- #5 - jumps on a hills - 20 seconds in and 20 seconds out of the saddle - keep these jumps slow, cadence will remain the same
- #6 - same hill format with higher cadence
- #7 - jumps at 32 count combos - try up/down for 8 and 4 counts - let the group explore jumps on their own - encourage them to silently count
- #8 - let the team rest the first minute then go into sprints
Playlists should always stay clean and fun - it's not always what you like, it's "what will they like." Add a variety of artists to your playlist so everyone can enjoy it. I try to throw a few old, new, and "who" songs in there. Personally, if people can sing every song in my class, they might not as be focused on the HR levels as they should be.
Enjoy!

Spinning/Cycling Playlist - 50 minutes of Pure R&B
Hi Team,
Here is your playlist for the week. So excited to start tonight's class with Snoop Doggy Dogg.
The main portion of the class repeats two elements, a hill and fast flat. We flip flop from leg strength to leg endurance. Although repeated, the resistance on the fast flats will gradually increase throughout the ride. I based this off my rides around Cincinnati. One minute you're going up a hill and before you know it, you're back on the flat road. It's fun andthrilling! Ha!
Please note that all of the levels are in parentheses below, i.e. (5). Before each fast flat and/or after a seated/standing hill, the class can take a break and grab a drink.

Spinning/Cycling Playlist - Happy 4th!
Team,
Today's playlist was influenced by the holiday. Happy 4th everyone! Katy Perry and Kelis help us bring this holiday to life. Although my classes are cancelled today, my class will appreciate this playlist next week.
This playlist has three elements repeated. I will repeat jumps, a fast flat, and a hill (both seated and standing). This format is great for a beginner class because the first round they will get use to the resistance and they can comfortably enjoy the second round.
Resistance Overload: at the start of the song, I will have the class add resistance to 6-7 and stand up out of the saddle. The entire class will remain standing until the last minute of this song. At :60 remaining, encourage the class to "have a seat and keep your cadence" or "sit down and keep the speed at which the pedals are turning." Resistance can slightly decrease once song finishes and have them stand up and prep for jumps.
What other songs could we incorporate in a holiday class?
Go Team Go!
